Why Democratic Presidents Love Unmanned Attacks (Cruise Missiles and Drones)

Back when Bill Clinton was president it was called Cruise Missile Diplomacy.  Clinton loved the cruise missile.  He used them against Iraq.  He used them against Sudan.  He used them against Afghanistan (firing 75 at once).  He used them against Belgrade.  He used so many that we ran out of them.

At over $1.4 million each, Clinton ran up a big bill.

Clinton’s two Republican predecessors and one successor couldn’t match Bubba’s appetite for destruction.  But Barack Obama has done a similar thing, this time with unmanned drones.

According to CNN:

Covert drone strikes are one of President Obama’s key national security policies. He has already authorized 283 strikes in Pakistan, six times more than the number during President George W. Bush’s eight years in office.

As a result, the number of estimated deaths from the Obama administration’s drone strikes is more than four times what it was during the Bush administration — somewhere between 1,494 and 2,618.

Republicans tend to send the troops in (Granada, Panama, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc…) while Democrats tend to use missiles and drones.

My belief is that Democrats are all about show while Republicans are about go.

The Democrat approach is to treat the symptoms by bombing the crap out of some place thinking that will “show them” but, in reality, it solves nothing (air power can’t win a war by itself) thus when a Republican gets in power the situation has become such that they are forced to send in the troops.

Carter’s handling of the world was a major contributor towards not only the Shah of Iran’s overthrow but also to the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan (a reaction to the Soviet invasion).  Bill Clinton also ignored key problems in the world and surely helped set the stage for 9-11 (especially considering he passed on three opportunities to kill or capture OBL).

Barack Obama did give the authorization to kill bin Laden (and for this, he deserves credit) however if we look at his foreign policy in the rest of the world it has been one of appeasement or drone attacks.

I agree with your assessment of the different methods used by the Democrats and Republicans. I would, however, note one thing. I believe the Democrats are somewhat prone to not getting their hands dirty when it comes to the nasty business of war. Thus, they use missiles, drones, etc., because they deem it’s a “cleaner” method of achieving the end goal. Republicans have no such qualms.
