You cannot protect society from the exception. The Oklahoma City bomber, Sandy Hooker shooter, the Ludy’s Cafeteria murderer, or the Bath School bomber were the exceptions.
A nation can pass all the laws in the world it wants and become a virtual police state as is happening in England with spy cameras and they can make their people paranoid thinking their neighbor works for the Stasi but they can’t make bad people behave well.
Plato said it best:
Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws.
Some people are calling for arming teachers, even starting a program where interested teachers could go through training like airline pilots and become certified to carry a gun in school.
This idea sounds good at first but aren’t so many Conservatives lecturing people about how incompetent teachers are and now they advocate them carrying guns? And many public schools are filled with violent children whose parents don’t bother to raise them… do we want them to play “which teacher is carrying a gun?” in the classroom?
Others are calling for even more security such as scanners at all school entrances, re-designing buildings to be more secure, and being able to “lock down” classrooms from a central location to prevent a shooter from wandering from one room to the next.
Are we supposed to indoctrinate an entire generation of Americans as to the “price of freedom” by locking them up like prisoners? Are kids really going to learn the values of self respect, independence, and freedom by getting frisked 5 times per day?
And getting back to our original point… you cannot stop the exception. Even if you place scanners at every door a determined student will find a weak point… someplace the planners have missed.
Another idea is to hire an armed guard to patrol each and every school. Have them carry a gun and be in charge of stopping a murderer. Another idea that sounds good in theory but someone bent on killing 20 or 30 people would simply take this guy out first, leaving the school unprotected.
So we are back to Plato… you cannot pass a law to end bad behavior because people are irrational and if they want to commit evil acts, they will.
I am a gun owner and I support legal firearm ownership and carrying concealed because I know it is a fact that if you’re going to break the law, you don’t care what the law is and thus by restricting firearms you only hurt people who follow the law.
People are going to get murdered either by firearms or knives or cars anyway there’s nothing you can do to stop someone. But what you can do is allow the “good people” to exercise their Rights and, one hopes, stop bad people from carrying out their plans.
