How Newt Helps Mitt

I have never considered myself to be a Mitt Romney supporter and have not been overly enthusiastic about his run for the presidency but Newt Gingrich is changing all of that and, in the long run, might be Romney’s greatest asset.

Gingrich elicits schizophrenic support.  People seem to love to cheer him on during the debates where he zings moderators and the other candidates, often by citing something a U.S. president from the 18th Century once said.  Everybody seems to agree that Newt is the best candidate to “trash” Obama in a debate.  But many of those same people then say a Gingrich candidacy would be disastrous for the Republican Party.

Ron Paul is out there with Osama bin Laden when it comes to foreign policy and Rick Santorum is better positioned to saw a May-Pole in half rather than running a nation such as the United States.

So that leaves Mitt and Newt.

Of the two, people are coming to the conclusion that Mitt is the better choice.

Gingrich did win in South Carolina but I believe Romney’s Mormonism was mostly the reason why The Repenter beat him (forgiving Newt was the Christian thing to do, after all).

People just can’t make a decision unless they have something against which to compare their choice.  Like a rodent, which object is more shiny and thus best to choose?

Newt comes off, in the beginning, as that new, refreshing sports drink until you realize it causes diarrhea and is either best avoided or drank in small quantities.

Newt can help Mitt become more passionate in his response and prodding of his opposition.  This lack of passion is a big drawback among Conservatives.

Mitt is too polite, too willing to let detractors and hecklers talk.  He is respectful of people who do not give him the same consideration, to his detriment.  His is as calm and smooth as his hair, which is a problem.

Newt can help Mitt with all of those things and, as a bonus, force on-the-fencers into his camp.

I have noticed my support of Mitt has been (very) slowly growing the more the prospect of Nominee Newt grows.  Who could rationally support a man who said just the other day that all of his cheating actually makes him more human and more understandable.  Sounds a lot like Bill Clinton’s situational ethics to me.

The heavy guns must be at work now because a slew of articles have been suddenly appearing online saying how Newt talked unfavorably of Ronald Reagan.  You know if Reagan is brought into the subject it’s serious because he’s as close to a political God as is possible.

The Liberal press loves the idea of promoting a Gingrich nomination but, like the Democratic Establishment, is probably more prepared for Romney running against Obama because of that whole Class Warfare/1% thing.

As long as Newt doesn’t hang on until June fighting Romney he will likely make him a stronger candidate and push the undecided towards him.

I know this is happening with me and I can’t be the only one.
