Wacky Wednesday: Hollywood Hypocrisy: Robert Redford, Sundance Film Festival, and the 1%
Nothing gets me fired up like some false Class Warfare/Liberal Hypocrisy. Robert Redford, the “Golden Boy” of American cinema, said the following about his corporate/affluent Hollywood-sponsored event:
We show stories of what people in America are really dealing with, and really living with, against a consequence of having a government that’s let them down. People can come and say, ‘God, at least we’re seeing how people are really living in America, and what they’re up against.’ We square away on the 99 percent.
The Sundance Film Festival (Redford named it that after the movie he starred in with Paul Newman called Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) is held in Park City, Utah. Out of curiosity I went onto Expedia and priced out a roundtrip plane ticket, 8 nights in a Holiday Inn Express, and an “economy” rental car and the total came to $1,298.53. This doesn’t include food, drinks, or other expenses. I picked dates a month from now so as to get the cheapest rate (things would have been much more expensive if I traveled last minute.
In total, per person, you’d easily spend $3,500.00 to visit the Sundance Film Festival (assuming you could even get a ticket – which isn’t accounted for in these numbers).
So two people for 8 nights means you’re looking at 7 grand. That’s not exactly 1% territory but it isn’t quite the domain of the 99% either, is it..?
As the Fox News article points out:
First, let’s look at the sponsors. The official Sundance headquarters “proudly brews Starbucks” with a pop-up stall assembled just for the festival. The Bing Bar hosts press conferences and interviews. Grey Goose Vodka sponsors several Blue Door events. The Acura Studio hosts premiere dinners. Even the city of Miami brought the Miami Oasis Suite to Park City to lure folks to the beach capital. And one of the hottest late night tickets is quite the sponsor mouthful: The T-Mobile Presents Google Music at TAO in Park City, which serves to recognize and support independent musicians through the launch of a new Google Music Magnified program.
Not to mention all of the super rich Hollywood stars that attend the events including Redford himself who has a net worth of tens of millions of dollars.
As we know, corporate money has flooded into Sundance over the years making it the epitome of the 1%. But the Left loves to believe the myth that they have not lost touch with the “common man” even as they earn as much in a day as the average American earns in an entire year.
There is a lot of self-loathing among Liberals. They have become rich, successful, and isolated from average Americans and yet they can’t bear the thought of acknowledging the fact that they know nothing of their lives so they have to pretend they understand peoples’ problems.
Robert Redford has acted in some great films and directed some even better ones over the course of his career but, like all Hollywood celebrities, he should stick to making myths on the Silver Screen not trying to create them in reality to assuage his conscious.
And there is an “Occupy” movement in Park City, Utah. Just don’t be surprised that you won’t see them at Sundance.
Oh, and here is a list of sponsors from Sundance for 2012:
And President Obama’s State of the Union speech was last night. We don’t want to completely ignore him so please enjoy this short musical presentation:

Sundance certainly doesn’t represent the tastes of the 99%, and doesn’t even try to. Not bowing down to the tastes of the populace is not necessarily a bad thing. However most of what comes out of the festival is pretentious crap.

An attempt at co-opting that makes Redford look absolutely foolish and hypocritical as well.
