Michelle Obama Says: Spend Money in the Gulf, Obamas Vacation in Maine

Hey America, visit Flordia... my family is going to Maine!
If the irony were any thicker, we’d need a knife. From America’s First Lady on her visit to Panama City, Florida:
During her 15 minute speech she praised the beauty of our beaches. “It’s welcoming, it’s pristine, and everybody should come here!” said Obama. She also reinforced a crucial message. “It’s important for the rest of the country to know these places are just as beautiful as they have always been.” Obama also shared a possible solution. “Truly, the best thing your fellow Americans can do is come down here and spend some money.”
Capitol Commentary thinks Mrs. Obama gave some great advice, especially considering her husband’s idea for an offshore drilling “pause” (which has been thrown out of two different courts so far) has already put a lot of people out of work.
The trouble with Michelle’s advice?
President Obama and the first family are planning a short vacation in Maine this weekend, traveling Down East on Friday for three days on Mt. Desert Island, the home of Acadia National Park, according to the office of U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, Democrat of Maine.
The Obamas will arrive Friday and stay through Sunday, Pingree said in a statement.
“What an honor that the Obama family has chosen Maine for vacation when they could have gone anywhere in the country,” said Pingree. “Those of us lucky enough to live here know it’s the most beautiful place in the world and I’m glad we can share it with the first family.”
We should remember President Obama’s words at the start of the BP oil spill:
I’m not going to rest or be satisfied until the leak is stopped at the source, the oil in the Gulf is contained and cleaned up, and the people in the Gulf are able to go back to their lives and their livelihoods.
The trip to Maine marks the third vacation since the spill and the other day Obama recently played his 8th game of golf.
But, hey, he’s on it. Ya know..?
Sort of.

Obamanation, can’t say this surprises me. In light of the fact that he feels the White House is a place to play hoops, and entertain his Hollywood fans.
According to Michelle, (responding to the fact that they play a lot)this will be a ‘working vacation’.

So much of a presidency is symbolism and messaging and it baffles me how tone deaf these people are on the PR side of things.
The ballsy thing to do would’ve been to go down there and vacation on the Red Neck Riviera. Obviously, that wasn’t happening.
The shrewd thing to do would’ve been a vacation to the interior, the furthest away literally and figuratively from the beach. Jackson Hole, WY is beautiful this time of year.
Of course, they go and choose a beach in the north east right after the First Lady made those comments rubbing it in the face of the folks on the Gulf Coast. Typical.

This would be front page stuff were it Bush making these remarks. What I can’t believe is Michelle says this on a Tuesday and on a Friday they hop on a plane for Maine.

i’d rather be in maine in july than the gulf coast. they get a pass on that choice from me.
however, the latter part of this post should get a pass from nobody.

You make a valid point that the Obamas could have sent a message by taking a vacation on the Gulf Coast. On the other hand, any trip to the Gulf Coast would probably not be much of a vacation. In addition, I am guessing that the President felt he owed a favor to Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins without whom he probably could not have gotten financial reform legislation passed. So I would also give him a pass for this decision. The trouble with being president of course is that you are going to get criticized no matter what you do. Especially on this blog!

Obama has had two vacations since the spill… I think he could have put his money where his wife’s mouth was and gone to the Gulf.
Obama visited Maine last year.
