Crazy Liberals in San Francisco Enact Cell Phone Radiation Law, City Loses Money

CTIA – the Wireless Association, will no longer have its conferences in San Francisco after this year.  The reason?

The group is taking its show elsewhere (along with 68,000 attendees and $80m in economic activity according to CTIA), a response to the cellphone radiation law passed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

“The Board of Supervisors’ action has led us to decide to relocate our show,” CTIA spokesman John Walls said in a statement. ” We have already been contacted by several other cities that are eager to work with us and understand the tremendous benefits that wireless technology and our show can provide their area.”

In a city drowning in debt, the annual conference would have created jobs, pulled in 68,000 visitors and resulted in an estimated $80 million in economic activity.  Now, San Francisco gets none of that (but a more friendly city will).

There have been many studies over the years about cell phone radiation, with a 2006 Danish study, “follow[ing] over 420,000 Danish citizens for 20 years and showed no increased risk of cancer.”  According to Wikipedia, which cites the study:

Until now there have been concerns that mobile phones were causing increases in brain tumours. Interphone is both large and rigorous enough to address this claim, and it has not provided any convincing scientific evidence of an association between mobile phone use and the development of glioma or meningioma.

The resolution, passed 10-1 by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, “require stores to post the specific absorption rates (SAR) of phones. Those rates are the levels at which radio frequencies penetrate body tissue.”

None of the people on the Board of Supervisors is a scientist, and none of them can prove cell phones cause anything more than rude interruptions at dinner or in meetings, yet their vote is going to cost the jobs and revenue.

Even U.S. Representative Ed Markey who “studied” the issue in the 90s admits there is no proof:

No single study is conclusive, and ongoing research is needed to add to the body of knowledge on this important subject. I look forward to following the implementation of the San Francisco ordinance and continuing the work I began in the 1990s when I was chairman of the telecommunications subcommittee, to encourage more scientific studies that advance our understanding in this vital area.

San Francisco, where I live, also required all residents and businesses to start composting their trash.  The building in which I live has two composting cans in the basement.  Guess what?  The basement smells like decaying food now (worse on hot days).

The misguided attempts of Liberals to give people “information” which has no scientific validity is yet another example of the bungling attempts of Big Government to intrude into people’s lives.  A better solution would have been to let the Federal Government handle it (cooler heads might have prevailed) or wait until there is proof that cell phones cause anything negative relating to health.

If cell phones did cause cancer, we would have figured it out already.  Society is too litigious to let this one pass without a lawsuit or two.

  • i am jack’s complete lack of surprise.

  • Isn’t it great that they can pass their little law, and then lose tens of millions in economic activity? I think all the people that just lost income over that should thank them!

  • I must agree with you on this one, Harrison. It is an absurd over-reaction to something we are not even certain is true. And there sits California, drowning in debt, then turning away a good revenue source. It’s enough to make even a Liberal cringe.

  • I lost my 29 year old Son from Glioblastoma Multiforme brain cancer in 2008. His Neurosurgeon told us it was his cell phone useage. Type in,” SDSU Brain Cancer Cluster,” and it shows articles about a brain cancer cluster on campus. My Son, Rich, was the graduate students mentioned in these articles. Today, I received an announcement that Another victim on campus died from the same brain cancer. There is a cell tower on campus, right near where all of these people were. All of this is dangerous! Gavin Newsom and some of the other Representative’s are not scientists, but have listened to several of them! This NEEDS to be done. Read,” Cell Phones and Brain Tumors, 15 Reasons for Concern,” by Lloyd Morgan. Kids between the ages of 20-29, with > 5 years of cell phone use, NOW have a 700% risk increase for brain cancer. And YES, putting a cell phone inside of your pocket, Testicular Cancer increases, and being near Towers, Cell Phone use, Wi-Fi, Please, Girls don’t wear underwire bras!!! Increases in Breast Cancers!
