Those Wacky Vegans
Freedom of speech for those who stand up to the Liberals? The Left just can’t stand dissent… Global Warming, Obamakare… whatever the topic.
An ex-vegan who was hit with chili pepper-laced pies at an anarchist event in San Francisco said Tuesday that her assailants were cowards who should direct their herbivorous rage at the powerful – not at a fellow radical for writing a book denouncing animal-free diets.
Lierre Keith, a 45-year-old Arcata resident, was attacked at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the 15th annual Bay Area Anarchist Book Fair while discussing her 2009 book, “The Vegetarian Myth.” A 20-year vegan, Keith now argues that the diet is unhealthy and that agriculture is destroying the world.
As Keith stood at a lectern at the Hall of Flowers in Golden Gate Park, three people in masks and black hooded sweatshirts ran from backstage, shouted, “Go vegan!” and threw pies in her face. While they fled, some in the audience cheered or handed out leaflets.

If the pies were vegan, they should not contain any milk, cream, eggs, or any other animal products. So first you might think about changing your illustration. But second, you have to wonder how good a vegan pie could really be.

I was thinking the animal products could have been put in the pies for their ironic effect.

@Joe
While you are right that vegan pies cannot contain any animal products, vegan pies can absolutely be cream pies if it’s not cream made out of animal products. There are a lot of great substitutes for animal products that vegan bakers use. For example, my local vegan-friendly ice cream place has vegan cupcakes (best cupcakes I’ve ever had, vegan or not), vegan ice cream (made from soy or rice milk depending on the flavor and also delicious — I don’t miss regular ice cream at all), and even vegan whipped cream made with coconut milk. In fact, at a recent vegan potluck, someone brought a coconut cream pie that looked a lot like the photo I see in the blog post. It was AMAZINGLY good. (I might be a vegan, but I still LOVE good food, lol.)
In any case, while I definitely disagree with Keith on many things and think she is even perhaps mean-spirited at times, I do believe she has the right to free speech and I absolutely do not condone her being hit with a pie for using that right. I — and many other vegans I’ve talked to recently online and offline (in fact, all of them as far as I know) — think that was an awfully mean thing to do and not something we approve of. I hope that others will judge us as individuals and not based on the actions of these few people even if they do turn out to be actual vegans (wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t, but then it wouldn’t surprise me if they were, either — it’s a mixed group, which I wish more people on both “sides” would recognize).

Perhaps there are San Francisco Vegans and then Others?
7:32 PM
I think it has less to do with their location and just what type of people they are as individuals
In any large enough group you’re bound to get a few bad apples.

This last statement is very true.

I believe that the purpose of the post is to show how some groups in the country, and primarily ones associated with the left, throw what is essentially a temper tantrum, and attack anyone disagrees with them.

Give that man a gold star!

And the point of my comment is to show that sometimes individuals are just individuals. At least, I haven’t noticed a vast conspiracy of vegan pie throwers, lol. Maybe vegan cupcake bakers, but why throw those when you can just share nicely?

Here is the video of the attack. Seems very mean spirited to me to whack a 45 year old disabled person in this manner just because she’s not towing the line; the intent wasn’t just to hurt but to humiliate too; reminds me of Fascist bullying.

liberal fascism, at its best.

Green on green violence.
Dig the guy in the audience throwing a banana peel at her after the assault. Classy.
Exit question(s): Was the intent of the chili pepper-laced pie to burn the woman’s eyes? Is this not a prosecutable offense?
