National Rifle Association’s Rough and Tumble Tactics

I have been an National Rifle Association (NRA) member for two years now.  Although somewhat uneasy with my membership, the Second Amendment is very important to me and there really is no other game in town as far as legal gun ownership and political power goes.
Since I have been an NRA member I have recieved several surveys in the mail which are supposedly used to tell our elected officials what we think about our Constitutional rights however they are, like most politically-based surveys, filled with slanted questions designed to produce the “right” answer.  These types of surveys anger me because they insult my intelligence.
The other day I recieved a call from the NRA in what I supposed was a fundraising effort.  I have recieved calls like this from the Republican National Committee as I made two donations to John McCain’s campaign (I also volunteered for him when he ran for president in 2000).  What bothered me so much about the NRA call was the fear tactics being used on me.
The caller described for me how the United Nations was trying to take away my guns and how there would be a conference on this very subject and how now that the Democrats control the House, the Senate, and the White House they could advance the “anti-gunner agenda.”
There is little doubt that President Obama is “anti-gun” based upon his statements about Chicago’s gun ban when he was but a local politician there and most Liberal Democrats would like to see gun ownership restricted.  What bothered me so much about what I was being told was that the NRA representative would not respond to my challenges.
I informed him that the UN has been trying to enact a “global warming” treaty for over a decade with no success.  I let him know that the UN is a corrupt organization that never can get much done except waste money.  He didn’t agree with me nor did he listen to my points, he simply kept on going with his “black helicopter” scenario (he did not mention “black helicopters” however he was on track to do so).
I let him know that if he was trying to make a sale he was losing his opportunity and that he could not treat everybody with whom he speaks the same.  He ignored me and kept right on going.
I raised the fact as to how dire the political situation of the Democrats is looking for November and how they have failed to enact any significant legislation thus far.  Not to be distracted, he told me that they would stop at nothing to take away my guns.  I let him know I lived in San Francisco where Supervisor Chris Daly put a resolution, which won, on the San Francisco ballot to ban handguns.
Sensing I was talking to a wall, I told the NRA representative to remove my name from their list and to never call me again.
I don’t want to stereotype gun owners the way Barack Obama did when he said people were bitter “clinging to guns and religion” but the NRA must think all members are ignorant and reactive people who will believe any tall tale involving Democrats and the UN.
Make no mistake, the UN is seeking to pass a treaty that, if enacted by the United States Senate, would place restrictions on gun ownership however it is unlikely such a treaty would ever pass and, if it did, that it would be found Constitutional.
I am thus torn anew in my support for the NRA.  On the one hand, I appreciate the lawsuits they filed in places like Washington, D.C. to allow citizens to legally own firearms however their tactics with current supporters leave much to be desired.
I’d be curious to know what sorts of impressions or interactions you may have regarding the National Rifle Association.

  • “…however it is unlikely such a treaty would ever pass and, if it did, that it would be found Constitutional.”

Question, well, could’nt they use that reconciliation process to pass it? lol

  • I admire your persistence to question the fundraiser the way you did; I long ago ran out of patience with political organizations–even the Libertarian Party. The only experience I have had with the NRA was at a fair in Marin several years ago. The guy behind the desk was very aggressive in trying to sign me up–a little off putting to say the least.
