Ask William Boetcker (Not Abe)
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.
- Rev. William J. H. Boetcker
This quote was originally attributed (incorrectly) to Abraham Lincoln. Thanks to reader J.D. for pointing out that I was in error.

This is the sort of thing that progressives think is antiquated and obsolete. Just like the ideas of The Founding Fathers. Anything that old couldn’t possibly still be relevant.
Common Sense is DEAD!

Hey you’re right!
“The quotes were published in 1942 by William J. H. Boetcker, a Presbyterian minister. He released a pamphlet titled Lincoln On Limitations, which did include a Lincoln quote, but also added 10 statements written by Boetcker himself.”
