Glad to see someone clear this up. One of my biggest pet peeves is someone saying how 'our standing' has fallen when they have no flippin' idea what's going on.

If Americans want to be loved by European countries, forget it. There are elements of resentment, jealousy, envy and cultural superiority in the attitude of Europe towards USA. Europe owes USA for the help it received in WW2. It's never easy to relate with someone to whom you owe freedom and money. Also, on a cultural basis, Europeans had much more importance until USA started exporting the American way of life. Now those countries have lost their influence but still think that they are more civilised. Hard for them to accept that the young New World has something better to offer than what their thousand-five-hundred-year experience has given them.

Surely Americans don't expect to be loved by Islam (anywhere), and other countries with different beliefs and philosophies?

Is it important to be loved? Why would some Americans worry about what other countries think? Providing USA doesn't deliberately insult anyone, I think it should simply shrug Europe, and be a bit less tolerant with its enemies. And care for its friends (like Canada!)

Wish I could have said this better. My French gets in the way, sometimes.

Yes we are wasteful but as other societies "advance" it seems they adopt many of the same habits that we have.

I personally do not think that political policies are the main reason the rest of the world does not have a favorable view of our culture and society. I think it has to do more with the people of our nation. In general, we have become a lazy, gluttonous, and wasteful society. We are by far the largest consumers in the world. We also have this philosophy that our way is the only way.
