Obama: Add Some Carter and Clinton, Then Stir

Watching Barack Obama’s presidency slowly implode has been very predictable.  He ran under the nebulous mantra of “change.”  But if we compare his goals with our friend Bill Clinton we find that, more often than not, they are the same.

Bill Clinton campaigned with 50% of Obama’s slogan… “Hope and Change.”  Don’t you remember Clinton’s slogan of “I believe in a place called Hope.”  Clinton was, of course, from Hope, Arkansas.  Clinton made two out of the three things Obama (and Democrats in Congress) has made a priority: Socialized Medicine and a Carbon Tax.  In the case of Clinton and Obama those two ideals sunk their popularity.

Witness these two popularity graphs (both done by Gallup):

Obviously, Clinton’s graph goes out four years while Obama’s only runs for a year but both men’s numbers for their first 12 months in office are very similar.  Where you see Clinton’s popularity take such a sharp dive is when he was working on letting gays openly serve in the military, was pushing through Hillarykare, and working on the BTU Tax.  His party got hammered in the 1994 mid-term elections and we had the “Contract with America” from the Republicans.

It should be remembered that gays did not serve openly in the military, Hillarykare went down in flames, and the BTU tax died a quiet death.

What has become of the Clinton/Obama game plan?  Democrats in the Senate have announced that Cap and Trade (the modern BTU tax) is dead for the year and, with Scott Brown’s victory in Massachusetts, Obamakare is likely dead.

The outcomes for both men’s first year in office are eerily similar!

It’s almost like Liberals only know how to run one or two plays and, even though they didn’t work last time, they just keep doing the same thing again.  This reminds me of a quote from the movie Ronan which is: “You go where you know.”

Unfortunately for the Democrats, where they know is off a cliff yet they seem determined to do it again!

As for Obama and Carter, the similarities of appeasing hostile foreign powers and having nothing to show for it is the same.  The result with Carter was the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the rise of Islamic Extremism in Iran.

  • America's Path

Nice article. Albert Einstein once said “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” This is so true in this case.

We will see if Obama does what Clinton did. With the unfavorable 1994 election results for Liberals, Clinton decided to back off and move more towards the center. He was able to save his reputation and win a second term (The fact that the GOP put up a horrible candidate also had something to do with it.) We will see what Obama does.

    • Clinton did some things unpopular with Democrats before the 1994 elections such as signing NAFTA and “reforming” welfare. He also raised taxes. Those things cost him politically but can be counted as “moving towards the center.”

Bob Dole was a great candidate but, next to Clinton, he was toast. He did surrender his senate seat to run for office which I admired greatly (unlike Kerry an Obama and Hillary who didn’t).

I was referring to the fact that he was a “boring old man”. I hate to say it, but many American’s take factors like this into account when they vote. This is one reason I thought McCain never stood a chance.

        • Bob Dole was past prime for president in the TV age. I agree with you. Too bad because he has one of the most wicked senses of humor (which probably didn’t help).

  • Bob Dole was not a strong candidate. I felt like he was running for president out of a sense of obligation to his party that honored with a “lifetime achievement award” of sorts. Zero energy through that entire campaign.

In fact, if anything, the ticket should’ve been flipped. I will always regret that Jack Kemp was not a bigger player on the national stage. He was the natural inheritor of the Reagan legacy.

  • Clinton had a lot of political savvy as an executive from his time as Governor. Obama has little.
