24: New Season Adds Liberal BS Regarding Iran

Another 24 season of BS?
I stopped watching “24″ about 2/3rds through last season because it just became too absurd. Absurdity always reins supreme in this show but it became too much even for me. I was sucked into watching the 2 hour premiere last night, however.
The first thing that struck me was that Iran’s fiery theocratic president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has instead been replaced by a Savile Row “Omar Hassan” who is president of the Islamic Republic of Kamistan. He is elegant, he is calm, his English is better than that of most people I encounter, and he’s having an affair with an American reporter! Okay, the absurdity started early.
The second thing that struck me was that he is sitting across the table from the Hillary Clintonesque U.S. president, Allison Taylor, a woman with such a WASPY name it could appear on a line of women’s suits and blouses. One wonders whether the American president got Hassan to the negotiating table by pouring out love and apologies the way Barack Obama has to Ahmadinejad.
I guess that part of the story happened before the season started.
The third thing that stuck me was that the revamped CTU, now in New York City, looks like a cross between a Starbucks and the bridge of the Enterprise in the most recent Star Trek movie. All the emphasis is on technology not “boots on the ground” and, as a result, there is some needless death of American operatives. This part is not absurd and nicely shows America’s reliance on Buck Rogers knowledge not Will Rogers common sense.
I will probably watch some of this season, at least until it becomes a farce, but the show does paint President Omar Hassan the way Liberals seem to think Mahmoud Ahmadinejad should behave… give the guy a few concessions, speak about how the U.S. and his country, Kamistan, can build a new future together, and all of the sudden he will “see the light” and give up sponsoring terrorism, support a “two state solution” with Israel, and become Westernized.
Sure, there was some face time given to those wacky extremists in his home country that would never stand for these things, but that was played down.
Were 24 to be based in reality, President Allison Taylor would be foundering the polls unsure how to even find her posterior, Hassan would be insulting her and breaking promise after promise, and, well, the part about America relying too much on technology to gain intelligence would stay the same.
But I guess that would be too much reality for Hollywood, wouldn’t it?

Harrison, my man, please don’t read too much into the political backdrops. I never viewed the show for anything other than what I wanted it to be: a tortured soul in Jack Bauer running around with the greatest cell phone on the planet, never eating, sleeping or showering, blowing stuff up, torturing the bad guys and saving the day in the end. Period.
I do agree with your analysis on some of the other stuff, though.
Additionally… Chloe is whining way too much. Why does the big blonde dress like she’s going to a cocktail party afterwards? Why does the Iranian President sound more like he’s from Central America than the Middle East?
I think Renee’ shows up tonight. That’ll be pretty cool, as she’s got a bit more of Jack’s brutal pragmatism about her. In fact, I wouldn’t doubt if she winds up being a bigger bad-ass than Jack himself.
Overall, I was kind of underwhelmed last night, especially considering last year’s epic two-hour movie and two-hour lead episode to kick-off the season. We’ll see what tonight brings.

The blonde was from Battlestar Galactica where she kicked some major ass. I expect maybe the same although that would be type casting? I think Chloe is the way she is to contrast the “old” CTU with the “new” CTU though, if past shows are any guide, CTU is the least secure place in the world.
I think the Iranian president’s daughter is Indian which makes it more confusing. I liked the part about how he was a former appliance salesman though.

I was not much impressed with the first part. I think I will hold judgement until I have viewed the whole opener. I learned a long time ago not to read too much reality into my fantasies. To do so just takes the fun out of everything.
