Why the Democrats are Failing in the Polls
Even though the 2010 mid-term elections are still about 10 months away, several Democrats have already dropped out and several more, including Sentate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada are behind in the polls. It’s never too early to have some excuses handy for when your party tanks in the polls.
What we will hear repeated, by Democratic Party leaders and, soon after, by commentators and others in the press is that Republicans have scared Americans into withdrawing support from them… basically a “blame Bush” tactic only now it is “blame Republicans.”
We have already heard this with people calling the Republicans the “Party of No.”
This should not come as much surprise to thoughtful people out there as it is much easier to simply shift the blame than to accept it. When George W. Bush’s party took big losses in the 2006 mid-term elections, he said it was a “thumping.” Liberals had a field day with his honesty and mocked him for it though he spoke the truth. Somehow, I don’t picture Obama or Pelosi saying the same thing… it’s not their character.
The mistake Americans made in voting for Obama was that they allowed themselves to be duped for “change” for change’s sake… nothing concrete was really ever stated and fawning journalists were never pressed for them to actually do their job and look at candidate Obama in the same critical light they did with McCain (or Romney, or Huckabee or Virginia’s George Allen who made the amusing “macaca” comment).
As anybody who has ever been on a boat can tell you, if there’s a storm in front simply changing course doesn’t mean you’ll avoid trouble… you need to know what your new heading is and what lies ahead. But Obama was the bi-racial wonder kid who could leap tall polls in a single bound and disavow his past and those in it without so much as a furrowed brow.
The error Obama and his fellow Democrats made was, ironically, the same thing they said George W. Bush did after 9-11.
Democrats today are doing the very same thing that they accuse Bush/Cheney of doing… using the economy as an excuse to push through an agenda which Americans never suspected (unless they paid attention) or approved. Barack Obama did win a majority of votes in the 2008 presidential elections, but it was far from a mandate to push through things like Socialized Medicine, massive social programs (hidden in the $787 billion “stimulus”), or of rolling back the protections that have kept America safe from another massive terrorist attack.
The Democrats have used the recession (a large part of which was caused by their manipulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) as their 9-11 to “re-make” America. Their shallow agenda has been exposed as, in poll after poll, Americans report they are unhappy with the “stimulus,” are against Socialized Medicine, feel “global warming” is bogus, and more disapprove of Obama’s and the Democratic Congress’ performance than approve.
The Democrats realize their window is closing… members of their party are either jumping ship or announcing they won’t run for re-election in November. Their strategies of “blaming Bush” are not having much effect and Obama’s act of staying “above the fray” as if he is some sort of senior advisor to Reid and Pelosi is being exposed as a charade as members of his party are biting back. Events such as the underpants bomber are, fairly or not, providing ammunition to Obama’s critics that his worldwide “apology tour” didn’t produce dividends.
What is most crucial in all of this, however, is that the public is buying into the narrative that Obama ran under one platform but is governing under a different one.

“What is most crucial in all of this, however, is that the public is buying into the narrative that Obama ran under one platform but is governing under a different one.”
This, I believe, is the fundamental truth that most cannot deny, and it is what is severely mamaing obama. Rewind 1 year, and Obama was THE SAVIOR THE MESSIAH ALL CAPS EXCITEMENT AMERICA IS BACK. Why? because he was “change”. He was “hope”. He was uncorruptable, and was not going to operate the District under the premace of “business as usual”.
The grim, ugly meat-hook truth of it is that he is like every other corrupt politician (in my opinion, he is worse-a rank amateur) in DC, regardless of what side of the aisle they stand on: they promise everything the public wants to hear just to get elected. It is that truth, that he is not different, that smashes everything the voter believed in.
8:10 AM
If he really believed his “hope and change” mantra he was naive and shouldn’t have been president. If he knew he was selling a load of crap then he is corrupt. Either way, bad news.

We don’t think Americans elected Obama believing he was a better man. Most people are not that naive, and stupid, about politicians. It was obvious they were fed up with Bush. They wanted a change. They’re not getting it in many areas. And, in other areas, the change is worse than what they expected. They’re afraid of where Obama is leading USA. That’s why the dissatisfaction is growing.
I’ll ask again: Who else is there to put the country on an acceptable road? Can the damage be repaired?
12:05 PM
I think the country is so divided and our “leaders” are so corrupt that there is not much hope.

claudia: i live in the DC area. forgive me for being presumptious, but you did not see the mass hysteria of the obama coronation. people thought the swamp was going to finally be cleaned out, and were made promises by the smiling, handsome young politician from chicago.
12:28 PM
jd – You’re right, I wasn’t there for Obama’s coronation. I was there for the beginning of Camelot. I was also there, with two young children, (in Houston, Texas), for the Missiles Crisis, 750 miles in direct line from Cuba. Everyone was wondering if we would survive the day. What had their Prince done? Well, he was forgiven when he was assassinated. He became a God. My ex was the British vice-consul at that time. I have never seen such adulation given to a politician, alive and dead. I hope that nothing ever happens to President Obama. All the wrongs will become rights, for years to come.
Harrison – I’m truly sorry for your great country. I have more hope than you. You have survived a Civil War. You would survive another. Most Americans, one by one, are tough and resilient. The strong will make it. And the country will rise up.
1:57 PM
claudia-i really didn’t mean any offense. i was trying to point out how people were perceiving the president elect as the savior and the solution for a better future. that is all.
one has to wonder how obama would handle the cuban missile crisis. as his track record shows, he probably would have given up the missile defense. in return, the USSR would still put their missiles in cuba.
3:49 PM
jd – Not to worry. I don’t offend easily. As for the Cuban Missile Crisis, Kennedy had brought in upon himself, and the world. It was the result of the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion, a cowboy plan devised by Kennedy’s administration. Cuba just retaliated. The Missile Crisis was the closest to a nuclear war we have ever been. I hope Obama doesn’t play the same type of games with Iran and Pakistan. I doubt it. Too much of a bower….
10:47 AM
I can’t imagine how anyone could think that Obama could not be corrupted, look at his associations.
I have to agree with Harrison it all looks pretty bleak.

It does look bleak for America right now. It will take a long time to restore. What we need to do is stop wallowing in the current bleakness of the situation and concentrate on how to fix this. We need to elect moral and upstanding officials to public office at all levels. We need to realize that decisions made by the last few administrations have put us in this position. It is not all Bush’s fault, it is not all the republican’s fault, it is not all Obama’s fault, it is not all Clinton’s fault, and it is not all the democrats fault. It is everyone’s fault. Blogs like this are a good starting point. Educate your children and grandchildren. They will be the ones to continue the fight after we are gone. Make no mistake, the poor choices made in the last 10 to 15 years will take much longer to fix.
