Airport Screening: Don't Use Your Brain

I was reading an interesting story by an Associated Press writer regarding airport security.  Many of the “ideas” are high tech like body scanners, lie detectors, even “mind reading” scanners that use people’s body temperature and facial expressions to “find” the terrorist.

Of course, Israel doesn’t rely on these things… they use trained people to ask questions and test for validity… catching people in lies, etc.  It is a low tech approach that works as Israel hasn’t had a problem with terrorism on its airlines in more than 30 years.

How it works in Israel:

At Israeli airports, widely considered the most secure in the world, travelers are subjected to probing personal questions as screeners look them straight in the eye for signs of deception. Searches are meticulous, with screeners often scrutinizing every item in a bag, unfolding socks, squeezing toothpaste and flipping through books.

Israel also employs profiling: At Ben-Gurion Airport, Jewish Israelis typically pass through smoothly, while others may be taken aside for closer interrogation or even strip searches. Another distinquishing feature of Israeli airports is that they rely on concentric security rings that start miles from terminal buildings.

The article concludes with this pearl of wisdom:

And many Americans would find the often intrusive and intimidating Israeli approach repugnant.

I wouldn’t find it repugnant if I knew that it was being done to keep everybody safe.  Which is more “intrusive” being asked probing questions and getting “profiled” or going into a full body scanner an having your entire body seen “unclothed” so employees could verify you weren’t packing a weapon?  And those scanners still don’t detect if you’ve stashed something in your luggage.

Israeli airport security is based on something that Liberals can’t understand: the real world.  Israel doesn’t have time to tolerate silly Liberal ideas about not screening people based on where they come from or what their beliefs are.  They do not care to have 3,000 people killed because someone was afraid to ask the “wrong” question.

And that’s why Israel’s planes are so safe and America’s aren’t.

  • An excellent post, and you are quite correct. Liberals rely upon the theoretical, rather than an empirical approach. But when something goes awry, they concentrate on laying blame and spending more money.

  • I heard that James Carville loves the full-body scans

  • The reality is that America has suddenly taken a “lay low” type of defense against terrorism on airliners. I could be wrong here, but I think the lack of leadership and a foreign policy which constantly begs for forgiveness has made the nation a bit less safe.

Great insight into Israel. I found that fascinating.

    Thanks Harrison!

  • I personally think that these increased screening measures are necessary. Let me put it this way, planes are extremely safe… until someone decides to make it a weapon… We citizens of the world (All of us USA, China, Europe etc…) should be happy that these things are put into place. We are the first ones to point the finger when something does happen but complain at the fact that it can be prevented at the cost of privacy/liberty.

Bohoo, If your one of those complainers… Don’t complain unless you are pissed of because it is know harder for you to bomb people… otherwise if you are a normal citizen don’t complain, it is after all your life that is being protected.
