Just Politics..? 2010 Political Predictions
2010 is going to be an interesting year. We have already seen how incredibly partisan Democrats in the House and Senate have been regarding everything from blaming the CIA for their failings (remember when Nancy Pelosi disappeared for a month after her “they didn’t tell me” speech?) to making grand promises and then going back on them (closing Gitmo, banning “torture” but writing in an exception to releasing thousands of pages of pending legislation only hours before a vote was due on it).
For 2010 I think it is safe to assume several things will happen. Here are the Top Ten:
10. “Global Warming” will continue to make headlines as supporters continue to grasp at any straw they can to keep support for Cap and Trade (or some version) alive even though Americans grow weary of the lies and subterfuge regarding this faux science.
09. There will be some major challenges in Iraq as President Obama seeks to extract American troops from that country even though there will be a rise in violence as the umbrella of American support is slowly lifted away. I predict President Obama will not withdraw all American forces but that he will dither so that not enough remain to do anything meaningful.
08. The much hyped “International Community” will not respond to President Obama’s pleas for more support in Afghanistan and thus our president will be forced to go it largely alone (and see a rise in American casualties). Liberal Democrats will stay silent until election time when we will again hear strong words to withdraw all American forces.
07. Obama/Pelsoi/Reidkare will go into law and Democrats will be repaid for defying the will of the American public with heavy losses in 2010 races.
06. Oil prices will rise to $120.00 per barrel by August of 2010 and, once again, there will be more calls to drill. Democrats will resist and instead use this as an excuse to push “alternative” energy on Americans and revive the discredited Cap and Trade bill. President Obama will be helpless to do anything and his numbers will fall further in the poles.
05. We will see Israel conduct military actions against Iran to try and prevent them from getting a nuclear weapon. We will learn that the Obama administration provided intelligence to Israel and countries like Saudi Arabia allowed the use of its airspace.
04. There will be a significant terrorist action against the United States. We will learn, afterwards, that once again because American’s intelligence services weren’t sharing complete information the culprits were allowed to slip through the net. Democrats will blame George Bush for it.
03. China will stop buying most American debt. This will cause a political crisis in America and there will be some backroom deals to allow the reckless spending we have seen thus far continue for a little while longer but the damage to the view that America can spend whatever it wants will be irreparable.
02. The Republican party will be badly divided by the Tea Partiers and this will weaken them greatly in the 2010 elections. Republicans will gain enough seats in the Senate to make life difficult for Democrats but they will not gain as many as they would have were the Tea Partiers not peeling off members of the GOP.
01. President Obama will continue to appease, allow himself to get taken advantage of by other leaders (Iran, Russia, North Korea) and will maintain after an electoral defeat in November 2010 that it was all Bush’s fault that he inherited the problems that he did.

Interesting list. If Israel attacks Iran, the US will inevitably be drawn into that conflict. Israel doesn’t have the Navy or the Air Force to pull this off alone. It is very likely that oil prices will rise, but this will largely be a result of the dollar declining in value rather than oil becoming more scarce.

I was thinking more along the lines of, as in the 80s, them bombing some stuff!

I’m not sure whether or not you are blaming the Tea Partiers in advance for insufficient GOP gains in ’10 but if perhaps Republican candidates got their act together, we wouldn’t be in the predicament we are now (see midterm ’06 and ’08 elections).
The Republicans lost their brand as small government/ethical government types during Bush’s second term and opened the door for the Democrats to inflate government, increase taxes and borrow and spend to a degree we have never seen in this country.
Having said all that and speaking as a Tea Partier, I am not down with 3rd partys for the reason you mention. I would like to think of my participation, more or less, as a boot up the ass of the G.O.P.

Iran has the naval capabilities to mine the Strait of Hormuz, thus increasing if not nullifying shipping insurance rates, which will send oil prices through the roof. The US is the only power with the naval assets to prevent Iran from doing this. The US is the only power in the region with the military assets to take out enough (meaning all of them) of the Iranian air defense systems. Unfortunately the situation with Iran has escalated beyond the point where Israel can unilaterally wipe out the problem for us. Israel attacks Iran, the US goes to war with Iran, whether Obama wants to or not.
