Yes, please, let's talk about President Carter! He helped to get the Shah of Iran overthrown which put in a terrible, oppressive theocracy who then took Americans hostage and Carter's military rescue attempt ended in American servicemen dying in the desert. He also helped encourage the USSR to invade Afghanistan which, as we all know, led to the Taliban and Osama bin Laden and 9-11. In 1994 Bill Clinton sent Jimmy Carter to N. Korea to broker an agreement and we gave them billions of dollars in food aid. As soon as Carter got back, N. Korea began cheating (though they had our aid) and the US and the UN signed three different agreements with them... all ignored by N. Korea.

Let's talk about Reagan... he was a huge factor in the collapse of the USSR and laid the groundwork for missile defense which we now rely upon to protect us from N. Korea and Iran.

And Bush's policy with N. Korea was to NOT engage them (because they are cheating liars) and Democrats said Bush was pushing them towards war.

FDR sent a lot of Americans to their death in WWII but I guess you miss the obvious point that it's better to have some people die now than have many, many more die later as a result of inaction (can we say 9-11 anybody?).

And let's talk about Bill Clinton while we're at it... there were no fewer than FIVE terrorist attacks (six if we count Timothy McVeigh) against this country by Muslims during his tenure and 95% of 9-11 was planned while he was in office. There was also Waco and Ruby Ridge, too.

But speaking about showing weakness, Osama bin Laden says it better than anybody else (how he must have loved there was a Democrat in office):

But your most disgraceful case was in Somalia; where- after vigorous propaganda about the power of the USA and its post cold war leadership of the new world order- you moved tens of thousands of international force, including twenty eight thousands American solders into Somalia. However, when tens of your solders were killed in minor battles and one American Pilot was dragged in the streets of Mogadishu you left the area carrying disappointment, humiliation, defeat and your dead with you. Clinton appeared in front of the whole world threatening and promising revenge , but these threats were merely a preparation for withdrawal. You have been disgraced by Allah and you withdrew; the extent of your impotence and weaknesses became very clear. It was a pleasure for the “heart” of every Muslim and a remedy to the “chests” of believing nations to see you defeated in the three Islamic cities of Beirut , Aden and Mogadishu.

Being "tough" as you call it doesn't mean you're going to always be left alone but it does discourage most people/nations from messing with you because they know they're going to get hammered badly so they just look around for easier pickings. Democrats used to know this lesson (FDR, Kennedy) but, clearly, they've forgotten it over the past 35 years.

Because Iran didn't mock Bush?

Because North Korea didn't test missiles when Bush was President?

What did Bush do diplomatically that was so sucessful?

Carter was actually a good President, if Reagan and Bush were more like him, then maybe a lot more American would still be alive today. Instead Arlington has a lot more of those white crosses. But hey, at least we're not viewed as soft worldwide right?

Obama "reached out" more than any U.S. President since Jimmy Carter. Where has it gotten him? Nuke tests from N. Korea, Iran's president mocking Obama, snubbing the Dali Lama so as not to offend Communist China, betraying U.S. allies in E. Europe to "improve" relations with Russia and get their "help" on Iran (which never happened). Where are the results? There are none... quite the contrary I'd say and we're only 11 months into his presidency. Can't wait to see what the other 3 years 1 month will produce.
