Diane Francis: Population Growth and Hypocrisy

I have two kids but you can only have one.
Recently an article by Diane Francis from the Financial Post was published advocating a “one child” policy for the entire world because it would help to save the planet:
The “inconvenient truth” overhanging the UN’s Copenhagen conference is not that the climate is warming or cooling, but that humans are overpopulating the world.
A planetary law, such as China’s one-child policy, is the only way to reverse the disastrous global birthrate currently, which is one million births every four days.
The world’s other species, vegetation, resources, oceans, arable land, water supplies and atmosphere are being destroyed and pushed out of existence as a result of humanity’s soaring reproduction rate.
Ironically, China, despite its dirty coal plants, is the world’s leader in terms of fashioning policy to combat environmental degradation, thanks to its one-child-only edict.
Would fewer people on Earth be a good thing for the rest of us? A lower world population would probably not be a bad thing, though the issues we read about hunger and lack of housing do not rear their ugly head in the First World (if anything, populations in those countries, removing immigration, is falling) but setting a government policy for only one child? What would be next… getting approval for who can have children so that the ones we do get are the genetically best that there can be?
The most ironic thing about this entire piece, however, is that the author has two children herself! This is from her website:
I left the business to stay at home with our two babies, Eric and Julie, for six years.
The comments on her blog are quite interesting. I think we can safely say this is the same type of Elitist Liberal hypocrisy we are used to seeing whenever these types of people preach about “saving the planet.”

I went to her blog and enjoyed many of the comments, I truly needed the laugh. Politicians are all hypocrites, but the Democrats seem to typify this behavior more than most. Their psychology is another example of self-deception as they continue to project erroneous ideology.

There is hypocrisy on both sides (preachers seeing hookers for example) but Liberals tend to try and change everybody’s else’s life as opposed to simply not living up to their own beliefs.

I was posting recently about the EPA and CO2, and I was going to make the comment that the reason that liberals are so concerned about maintaining abortion rights is because it fits in with their environmental agenda.

Like any beliefs there are probably a subset who subscribe to this although I would hope this is not the majority.

The overpopulation theory that Liberals love to raise as a “crisis” cause fits in rather nicely with the Eugenics platform that progressives from the mid twentieth century strongly advocated.
There is no population problem in the 1st world because capitalism has removed all of the financial reasons to have large families: (i) More hands to work the fields and to provide for the family. (ii) Insurance for old age. The more rich a society becomes, the less children that society has as it moves away from agrarianism.
If environmentalists and liberals want a less polluted world, why don’t they push for a proven system like free-market capitalism? Instead, we get a suggestion that a fascist and dictatorial decree (Chinese-style, no less) would be a great idea to save the earth. And then they wonder why conservatives think that they are loons.

Despite regulating childbirth, China is still the #1 polluter. Wonder why? Russia on the other hand is giving away free cars for people to reproduce.

China does manufacture a lot for Western countries though.

I wonder if the one-child policy will come with a baby trading market similar to the carbon trading market.
14:51
Good point why wouldn’t it. After all, Carbon trading allows guilty Liberals to live it up while their Blue Collar underlings have to make do with things like walking or taking the bus.
18:45
Currently the opposite system is in place, where people with children get a “credit” on their taxes.
