Stop Knives, Save Lives (Absurd Liberal Idea)
England banned guns because too many people were dying. People still died. So they banned pointy knives! Check out this “rally” in England against knives! Well, they made a stab at it, anyway:

Not to mock anybody who has lost someone to violence but a rally against knives..? What will the Brits use to cut the cheese?
My biggest issue with rallies like this is will someone who is going to stab somebody remember there is a political movement afoot against stabbing people and thus change their behavior? Also, how would something like this “raise awareness” about the issue of stabbing people? Somehow, this sort of thing should be common sense.

Lets see, they outlawed almost all private ownership of firearms and gun crime skyrocketed as a result. Now they want to restrict private ownership of knives? I think liberals are incapable of thinking logically. Here’s an idea- If they think outlawing knives will reduce the number of criminals with knives, why don’t they just outlaw all violent crime? If armed robbery is illegal, criminals won’t do it, right?

Liberals lack logic, reason, and a conscience. They are however, supremely adept at perpetuating victimization. They will never understand that you cannot legislate human nature.

Yes you are correct you cannot! This is why their ideology always fails. And I think pointy knives have already been banned.

No matter which party line you stand upon, this idea is absurd. But to direct myself to LibertyPen, if we ought not to legislate human nature, why is the Right so against abortion? It will happen, regardless of any legislation, yet it has been a pivotal point for Conservatives.

Anti-abortion supporters believe it is the same as murder, that’s why. Using the rationale that “it will happen anyway” leads to a rather slippery slope where one could say why have any laws at all as people will simply do what they want. I happen to feel abortion should be legal but it does bother me when I read about women who use abortion in place of birth control or responsible behavior or make-up companies that use aborted fetuses in their skin creams.

To askcherlock,
I cannot speak for the right, I am a Libertarian. While I may not agree with abortion, I have no right to infuse my beliefs into the parameters of another individual’s life. Therefore, I cannot speak for the Right. You have, however, reinforced my position with your explication quite nicely.
It is reasonable to state that political positioning maintains a certain measure of advantage by legislating ideology. Each has a vision for a societal construct, I happen to be of the position that liberalism, and its progressive variants, are cancerous and debilitative to our Republic. Stifling crime by outlawing various forms of weaponry is absurd.

I think I am going to side with the anti-knife people here. Knives are used for one thing, and one thing only: killing people.

Just for the record I am opposed to abortion, and I am a Liberal. The usual argument is not that you “cannot legislate human nature,” but rather that you cannot legislate morality. It is done, however, on both sides of the aisle for the greater good of a society. Civil Rights legislation, Americans With Disabilities Act and others are examples.

Then after we ban knives, let’s focus our animus towards books. Their ability to provide facts, information, and counter viewpoints, cannot be tolerated in our society.
If you wish to propose the argument that legislating the human condition has advantages, I will yield to a small degree. The problem is, it never stops there. For example, legislating morality in the form of redistribution is a fallacy – but it is not stopping the current administration from trying. Moreover, it is the antithesis of fairness but it is done under the guise of societal betterment.

Hmmm, sounds vaguely like Ayn Rand. I cannot say that I totally disagree with the premise. You see, therein lies the problem. As a society we like to pigeon-hole people into nice, neat categories and tie strings around them to denote who they are and what they stand for. The human spirit, however, is far too complex for such simplistic answers. That is why there are Blue Dog Democrats and Centrist Republicans. We are not nice, neat packages.

Take away people’s food and/or water supply and most will fall into one neat little package: savages.
5:16 PM
Which part is Ayn Rand? And the reason people categorize others is because there is justification to do so, is it a prescribed totality? No, but nevertheless. But again, your response parallels my own premise. Human nature is too complex for simplistic answers, but that doesn’t stop the government from trying to legislate its restriction.

Harrison, some perhaps would turn into “savages.” I do not believe all would. I believe in the innate goodness and the triumph of the human spirit, though heaven knows there are those who are sociopaths. Neat packages? Very complex, I think.
