Having grown up in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan areas I can tell you the thought process is different. The Democrate's party machine rules both states; the only wild card are the independents.
On a recent Hannity forum with pollster Frank Luntz a young women who identified herself as an independent was asked about the high taxes and entitlement programs. She replied,if we have the tax money to spend then we should spend it on entitlements. I doubt she was an independent, if she was then she must be brain dead or have a severe metabolic disorder effecting her though process.I rest my case.

Actually there is a movement afoot to tax hybrid drivers more because they use more road per mile than non-hybrid drivers:

So you really can't win!

I would love to have the infrastructure to enable to me to get to a multimillion dollar mansion in the mountains with a helicopter pad, but unfortunately I can't afford it. The cost of building infrastructure is typically a very small piece of the tax pie, and it is the easiest public expenditure to plan for and tax accordingly. Liberals always throw out the line, "You don't like taxes, but you like roads." Stupid in my opinion. Where I live they tax gasoline to build roads. This is good business sense, the people who use the roads (except of course the holier hybrid drivers) pay for them. This is a tax I can support. You look at California, Michigan, New York, and any other bankrupt basket case state in the country, and they are usually governed by democrats, and their states are bankrupt because of out of control spending on social programs. The problem with these entitlements is that the people who use them don't pay for them. This causes the people who do pay for them to leave. This would be like starting a business where customers come pay you money, and you give a good or service to someone else. This is stupid business sense, and explains whey there are no businesses (except maybe insurance) that follow this model (which probably is why government wants to take over insurance so badly)

Spending money you don't have because you don't have the political guts to cut programs isn't basic business sense.
