Nixon used to complain about that all the time, that he was rarely given the chance to communicate anything directly without some commentator telling people what was wrong with what he was saying. I think it is understandable that any leader wants his words to be heard directly, rather than filtered by the media, but I also think that most leaders have a limited ability to control that.
