Obama Wins Nobel Prize – The Politilization of Peace
From the Associated Press:
President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in a stunning decision designed to encourage his initiatives to reduce nuclear arms, ease tensions with the Muslim world and stress diplomacy and cooperation rather than unilateralism.
Many observers were shocked by the unexpected choice so early in the Obama presidency, which began less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline and has yet to yield concrete achievements in peacemaking.
Some around the world objected to the choice of Obama, who still oversees wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and has launched deadly counter-terror strikes in Pakistan and Somalia.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee countered that it was trying “to promote what he stands for and the positive processes that have started now.” It lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama’s calls for peace and cooperation, and praised his pledges to reduce the world stock of nuclear arms, ease American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthen the U.S. role in combating climate change.
How pathetic for the Nobel committee… Obama had been in office for about two weeks when they decided to award this to him. Kind of sad that someone was given an award based upon what they hoped to accomplish when in office. If someone has actually done something I’m all for it… but for two weeks in office??
Why now?
According to the article:
“He got the prize because he has been able to change the international climate,” Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said. “Some people say, and I understand it, isn’t it premature? Too early? Well, I’d say then that it could be too late to respond three years from now. It is now that we have the opportunity to respond — all of us.”
Yeah… in three years Obama might actually have had to show results.

Sour grapes, Harrison. Obama has not even been in office for a year yet, granted, but he has made tremendous strides in damage-control over the public relations pock-marks left by the Bush administration. He has not been globe-trotting for a good time. He has been doing it with righteous purpose.

The man had been in office for 11 days when he was awarded the prize. I was always taught, apparently incorrectly, that rewards happen after results.
9:03 AM
this post is a mistake. obama won the “neville” award, not the nobel.
how surreal is it that the left can accurately blame this one on bush?
9:52 AM
When things go Obama’s way it is because people saw the “truth.” When things go against him it’s Bush’s fault.

“He has not been globe-trotting in some time.”
So I guess the Olympic bid was done by holographic proxy? And could you itemize Obama’s so called ‘tremendous strides’ that effected a significant result?
So I guess the restructuring of our Republic into a leftist, progressive construct also qualifies as “righteous purpose,” zealotry is still zealotry.

I would be willing to bet that the Nobel people are going to wind up with egg on their faces by the time this award is handed out again.
10:40 AM
It’s really hard for me to see how this is a bad thing. Personally, I am very proud of my country and the President today.

Because it cheapens the Nobel, that’s why, and it gives somebody who hasn’t yet created RESULTS an award that other people have EARNED but for which they are not being recognized.

Again, although you ‘lived’ 2 years in France, you show your ignorance.
The Swedish Academia points out the Nobel Price Winners. Only…the Nobel Price For Peace is appointed by 5 members of the Norwegian parliament. A country which has a higher standard of living than the USA…and 10 times higher standard of living than CA.
But keep on reading Glenn Beck, Rus Limbaugh, Ann Coulter (how old is she?..))
It was no against Chigago and Yes for Obama.
cheerio. the world is watching the you now..))
11:24 AM
Hans, I’m afraid, once again, you have pointed out your own ignorance. I never mentioned the “Swedish Academia” nor wrote about Norway (or Glenn Beck or “Rus” Limbaugh or Ann Coulter)… I merely posted a story from the AP about Obama being awarded the Peace Prize and the story, and my comments, contained no errors.
And Norway should have a standard of living as high as they do… they have a population of 4.6 million and they are sitting on a ton of oil which allows them to produce about 2.56 million barrels per day of the stuff.
When we speak of “ignorance” I guess I need to ask whether you see it in yourself of not.

“…they have a population of 4.6 million and they are sitting on a ton of oil which allows them to produce about 2.56 million barrels per day of the stuff.”
Exactly. And they have no qualms about off shore drilling or building dams to generate energy and profits.

^^-not sure what kind of weird, twisted logic circle hans is trying to construct.
11:22 AM
It is pathetic that the Nobel committee chose to give the Peace price to someone who has done nothing to deserve it. There are far more worthy candidates for the Peace Prize.
And Hans, comparing Norway to the U.S. is like comparing apples to oranges. Norway has a population of less than 5 million people for a country about the size of California. And California’s economic output dwarfs Norway’s. I’ve been to Norway and it’s OK if you like freezing your butt off.

Harrison; show your Investort News…what the heck, your news inspiration….believe in lala world. But Norway and Sweden are two different countries…maybe Bush didnt noticed. But you? A connaisseur of Europe after 2 failed years in France..))
Vulcanhammer: how many countries you visited, how many languages you speak? Do you write properly English? Do you get a book published in your own language? I don’t think so. Ever been to Europe…or was it ‘Europe for 1 USD a day’?
Sleep well…
The world is moving on, without your brains…and without you ignorant Yanks.
be ashamed to act like the KKK in the sixties.

Hans, we don’t tolerate personal attacks and you are way out of line. You are no longer welcome here and you have been banned!
Best wishes.

^^i….don’t…..understand…what….he…is…trying…..to…..say
hans, you may speak many languages, but it appears you lack understanding in some of them.
but hey, even hitler got a book published in his own language.
12:45 PM
Hans: I’ve been all over Europe, South America, Central America, and I’ve been to Japan and Hong Kong–I spent 18 months living in Madrid and 15 month in London. I’m bi-lingual. I speak perfect Spanish. I’ve never written a book but I have published a couple of articles. But what the heck does that have anything to do with your weak comparison of Norway and the U.S.?
Your comments are bitter and angry, Hans. And you don’t address the issue at hand.

See what happens? I spend all day finishing off an addition (drywall, tile etc.) and I miss the opportunity to point out Hans’ obtuseness. But I must vent, if only a little.
Hans: Remember your statement regarding ad hominem attacks? The entirety of your comments leaves one to hypothesize that you may suffer from some undiagnosed mental disorder. They are nonsensical and laced with vitriol, which precludes any visible form of rationalization from manifesting. But having said all of this, I must admit that your puerility has brought much laughter – so I thank you.
