And Now for Something Important (Beer)

October 2, 2009 12:00 PM 8 comments

Taking a break from the rough-and-tumble world of Liberals and Conservatives we have something on which we may have an easier time finding agreement… beer (or maybe not!).

There are many kinds of beers from many different places but when I reach for a brewski I prefer 1664.  This stuff is getting tougher to find!  Beverages & More! used to carry it at all of their stores but now, much to my dismay, only a few in San Francisco, Kalifornia have it.  So when I do find it I buy a lot of it.  Unfortunately it’s only sold in six packs.

I go through phases where I’ll drink Bitburger, Becks Dark, Saint Pauli Girl Dark, Heineken Dark, Newcastle Brown, or Miller Genuine Draft but 1664 is my favorite.  They started brewing the stuff in, you guessed it, 1664 and I think that’s pretty cool.  When I lived in France I drank a lot of Export ’33′ but that stuff is just plain nasty after a while.  I also drank a lot of Bitburger.  Many a time after having too many beers I’d try to remember what “Bitte ein Bitmeant (please ask for another Bitburger!).

So after you have your Freedom Fries you can try some 1664!

  • I will have to try and find this. My preference is suited to German beers since I find them more flavorful. But just looking at it makes me thirsty. BTW – I wish to extend my apologies for the communications between Hans and myself. I do not wish to drive off readership, so again, I do sincerely apologize. If I had this beer I would give you a six pack. :-)

    • I cannot speak for Hans, obviously, however he came very close to what I would call “flaming” and when he had some normal reactions to that it looks like he chalked it up to political ideology not manners.

You did nothing wrong but English is not the man’s first language (maybe not even his second) so maybe some of the nuance of your words was not understood?

  • Good to see that you’re a man for dark beers, Harrison. I love Guinness. I used to drink Newcastle Brown quite a bit during my college years. As far as domestic brews I’m still a big fan of Samuel Adams–great taste. Boont amber ale, Lagunitas IPA, and Boddington’s rounds it out for me.

    • Boont is a great beer. The brewery is about 5 miles from this great campground I go to in Philo, Kalifornia. I’ve been there… nothing special but that is a great beer.

Nasty beer I used to drink in college in the States was Olde German… little neck bottles… from PA I think!

The IPAs are not my favorites but Boddington’s is a nice one, too.

  • A dark beer lover! My kind of guy. Have you ever tried Weihenstephaner Doppelbock? It is a great dark beer but can be hard to find. As far as domestics go I love the Yuengling Porter and Lager. There are few things on this earth better than a Yuengling Porter or Lager on tap.

  • Weihenstephaner!! I am a huge fan, top three beers for me. I pick it up in Reno at an establishment called, Ben’s liquor (they sell them in single bottles), so when they get it in I go buy them out. I have a separate fridge just for my beer, and it makes me happy. :-)

You’re a good man FL, I shall drink one in your honor tonight.

  • Harrison, as an unrepentant hop-head, I’m very partial to pale ales and IPAs but if I see this stuff down here in SoCal, I’ll give it a shot.

Props to Vulcanhammer for recognizing Lagunitas. I have not had a beer from them that I did not thoroughly enjoy.

May I also recommend Racer 5 IPA from Russian River BrewCo.

San Francisco’s Parklets: Another Stupid Liberal Idea

I’ve lived in San Francisco since 1995 and, for part of that time, it’s been without a car.  I don’t mean I’ve been one of those hypocritical people who don’t own a car (and decry the internal combustion engine) but rents one for the weekends.  I mean without a car. Like...
