Maureen Dowd: Another Liberal Race Baiter

We all know about Joe Wilson’s rather rude yell of “You lie!” during President Obama’s speech the other night.  Whether Mr. Wilson agrees or not with the president, what he did was wrong.  It is true that Democrats have booed Republican presidents in the past, but sinking to their level is unacceptable.  Now we have yet another attempt by Liberals to bring race into the discussion, this time we have plagiarizing New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd throwing in her two cents on the matter:

The normally nonchalant Barack Obama looked nonplussed, as Nancy Pelosi glowered behind.

Surrounded by middle-aged white guys — a sepia snapshot of the days when such pols ran Washington like their own men’s club — Joe Wilson yelled “You lie!” at a president who didn’t.

But, fair or not, what I heard was an unspoken word in the air: You lie, boy!

To his credit, Obama’s White House distanced themselves from this allegation:

The White House on Sunday dismissed a claim by New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd that administration critics like Rep. Joe Wilson, who called President Obama a liar during his health care address to Congress, are motivated by race.

Dowd wrote in her column that Wilson’s outburst Wednesday — when he shouted, You lie,” at the president for claiming his health care reform plan would not cover illegal immigrants — convinced her that racial angst is the underlying motive among Obama critics like Wilson.

“I’ve been loath to admit that the shrieking lunacy of the summer … had much to do with race,” she wrote. “But Wilson’s shocking disrespect for the office of the president — no Democrat ever shouted ‘liar’ at W. when he was hawking a fake case for war in Iraq — convinced me: Some people just can’t believe a black man is president and will never accept it.”

Dowd wrote that Wilson “clearly did not like being lectured and even rebuked by the brainy black president presiding over the majestic chamber.”

Asked about the claim, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said race is not the factor.

“I don’t think the president believes that people are upset because of the color of his skin,” he said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I think people are upset because on Monday we celebrate the anniversary of the Lehman Brothers collapse that caused a financial catastrophe unlike anything we’ve ever seen.”

In an interesting take on the matter, a writer for the Daily Telegraph in England had this to say:

This isn’t a case of limey gutlessness. It’s to do with our legal requirement that if you accuse someone of a gross moral lapse, you have to prove your case. Dowd has just strongly implied that Wilson insulted the office of the president (and there’s no doubt that he did, and was right to apologise) because he’s a racist. Evidence? None that a jury over here wouldn’t throw out in five minutes.

Please, don’t give me that first amendment crap. The New York Times demands high enough standards of evidence when the target of a defamatory remark is a liberal. But Joe Wilson is fair game – not because he behaved so badly, but because the financially troubled “old gray lady” and her employees are still in the grip of Messianic delusions.

I guess Dowd should be happy she’s not in England or she might be doing hard time behind bars for her baseless, inflammatory comments.

This is not the first time Liberals have brought race into things when it doesn’t belong.  Wilson’s bad manners have been rewarded as he’s taken in over $750,000.00 in donations since his outburst.

I don’t endorse his behavior but he was correct in what he said.
