Remembering D Day in Normandy, France

Having visited the Normandy beaches, seen the landing spots, and the main American and German cemeteries I must say that it is a moving experience. The American cemetery is, of course, beautiful and well tended. I found the German cemetery to be of more interest as the headstones are black and there is a huge hill in the center composed of unknown Germans piled high and buried. You may see photos of the German cemetery here and the main American cemetery here.
The Normandy landings would not have been possible without the earlier triumphs in North Africa and Italy but, in members of the Allies’ minds, these will always be the best known of all the WWII battles.
In honor of the brave Americans, Brits, Free French, and others who landed in Normandy on this day in 1944 there will be no political postings today.

While I lived in Germany – we used to go to France often to visit many of the American cemeteries. There are 10′s of thousands of Americans buried in France all around the countryside. While I don’t have any love for the French at all, what I will say is that they have built and maintained these hallowed grounds very well.
Great post.
