Democrats Go After Gun Owners (Again)

Will the Liberals stop at nothing to take away the right to bear arms?  This time they’re not going after the guns but the ammunition.  As I wrote in an earlier article, Liberals might be too scared to ban guns outright but attacking issues around owning a gun is a tactic they are pursuing with vicsiousness.  This time we have a bill proposed in the Kalifornia by Kevin De Leon (D) which targets (no pun intended) ammuntion sales:

This bill would require that commencing July 1, 2010, unless specifically excluded, no person shall sell or transfer more than 50 rounds of handgun ammunition in any month unless he or she is registered as a handgun ammunition vendor, as defined. The bill would also require these vendors to obtain a background clearance for those employees who would handle ammunition in the course and scope of their employment. The bill would require the Department of Justice to maintain a registry of registered handgun ammunition vendors, as specified. Violation of these provisions, as specified, would be a misdemeanor.

By creating a new crime, this bill would impose a state-mandated local program.

The bill would also provide that no retail seller of ammunition shall sell, offer for sale, or display for sale, any handgun ammunition in a manner that allows that ammunition to be accessible to a purchaser without the assistance of the retailer or employee thereof.

So let’s say that I own 100 rounds of ammunition and my buddy wants to buy it from me so he or she can go target shooting.  I am forbidden by law from selling this ammo to them unless I am registered as an ammunition vendor!  If I went to a gun store to buy ammunition I could not look over their selection and choose what I wanted unless someone who worked there (and met the legal requirements) helped me in my purchase!  If you have ever been to a sporting goods store you will know there are hundreds of different kinds of ammunition out there for handguns (the law only applies to them for some odd reason) and it would be very onerous for the store owner to employ (and legally qualify) enough employees to help everyone who came in.  It would greatly discourage anybody from buying ammunition for their handguns because of the time and inconvenince this law would impose.

Furthermore:

Commencing July 1, 2010, the vendor shall not knowingly make a false entry in, fail to make a required entry in, fail to obtain the required thumbprint, or otherwise fail to maintain in the required manner records prepared in accordance with paragraph (2). If the right thumbprint is not available, then the vendor shall have the purchaser or transferee use his or her left thumb, or any available finger, and shall so indicate on the form. If the purchaser or transferee is physically unable to provide a thumbprint or fingerprint, the vendor shall so indicate on the form.

So in addition to not being able to personally select what ammunition I want I would also have to be fingerprinted before buying any handgun ammunition!  How, exactly, is this supposed to do anything but discourage people from buying ammunition for their handgun?

Not only that but this bill would also ban the purchase of ammunition by mail.  This will not only make ammunition more expensive for people to buy but also, for some, make it impossible for them to buy ammunition for their firearms if they have a collector’s piece or any other firearm that uses obscure, obsolete rounds.

He was against civilian gun ownership, too.

He was against civilian gun ownership, too.

Liberals will stop at nothing to prevent Americans from exercising their Constitutionally guarenteed rights to bear arms, to protect themselves, their property, and their families from criminals.  As always, those who own guns illegally and are intent upon robbery, murder, or other mayhem will not be following the law.  Gun stores will be forced to pay higher costs and some may end up closing.

Make no mistake about this bill… it is designed to prevent people from using their firearms!

Here is the information from the NRA… if you are concerned about your rights contact the appropriate politicians now:

Yesterday, the Assembly Committee on Appropriations passed Assembly Bill 962.  Senate Bill 585 was also passed by the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Sponsored by Assembly Member Kevin De Leon (D-45), AB962 would make it a crime to privately transfer more than 50 rounds of ammunition per month, even between family and friends, unless you are registered as a “handgun ammunition vendor” in the Department of Justice’s database.  Ammunition retailers would have to be licensed and store ammunition in such a manner that it would be inaccessible to purchasers.  The bill would also require purchasers submit to fingerprinting, which would be submitted to the Department of Justice.  Lastly, mail order ammunition sales would be prohibited.  AB962 now heads to the Assembly floor for consideration. SB585, introduced by State Senator Mark Leno (D-3), would prohibit the sale of firearms and ammunition on the property or inside the buildings that comprise the Cow Palace .  In short, SB585 is a stepping-stone to banning gun shows on all publicly-owned property in California .  SB585 will now be considered on the floor of the Senate.

Both bills could be voted on as early as next week so it is imperative that you make your voices heard loudly.  Please contact your State Assemblymember TODAY and respectfully urge them to oppose AB962.  Also, please call your State Senator and urge them to oppose SB585.  Contact information for your state legislators can be found
