Obama Maintains Another Bush Policy: Rendition

Please remind me how this is really any different from what the former Bush administration did..?  Is this upholding those “principles” of which Obama so likes to speak?

The New York Times reports:

WASHINGTON — The United States is now relying heavily on foreign intelligence services to capture, interrogate and detain all but the highest-level terrorist suspects seized outside the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, according to current and former American government officials.

The change represents a significant loosening of the reins for the United States, which has worked closely with allies to combat violent extremism since the 9/11 attacks but is now pushing that cooperation to new limits.

In the past 10 months, for example, about a half-dozen midlevel financiers and logistics experts working with Al Qaeda have been captured and are being held by intelligence services in four Middle Eastern countries after the United States provided information that led to their arrests by local security services, a former American counterterrorism official said.

I’m sure the countries that nab these terrorists like Pakistan and Syria would never do anything like waterboarding, right?  How is not “torturing” terror suspects yourself any different from allowing other nations to do it for you?

Hypocrisy in action, yet again.  Where is the Liberal outrage?

  • Ideology aside, you go with what works. At least Obama, even if he is playing partisan politics, is bowing to reality even if he is trying to save face whilst doing it.

  • I can’t help but notice that the term Terrorist appears in the sited article. Weren’t we dealing with an overseas contingency operation?

I must point out that it’s obvious to most that the recent arrests of 3 domestic terrorists were most likely exposed by the once evil and now wonderful patriot act.

Too bad Dr.O wouldn’t just tell the rest of the left-wing extremists to back off because they can’t understand the reality of things the way the President does.

Clearly Obama has been “schooled” on the ways of the world since he took office.

    • In its financial distress, the NYTimes probably couldn’t afford to update its software to replace “terrorist” with “overseas contingency operations.”

While I applaud Obama’s bending towards reality I condemn his politicization of other Bush-era policies so as to deflect attention away from his reversals.

Obama had better hope there is not even a minor attack on the U.S. or it is he who will be solely blamed for “softening” his stance towards terrorists.

  • Harrison,
As a “liberal” and an ardent supporter of Barack Obama I am disappointed by the President’s turn-arounds on several key issues, such as the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and the escalation of forces in Afghanistan. However, I don’t see anything wrong with cooperating with foreign intelligence sources, and I don’t see that as an inconsistancy with Obama’s policy not to condone (or participate in) the torture of prisoners. The right-wingers in this country are never satisfied. Obama gets critized for not wanting to torture prisoners, yet he still gets critized when torture is used by others.

    • Thank you for your comments. President Obama says “torture” is morally wrong and that this country doesn’t “torture.” This is an absolute. Allowing another country (like Syria or Egypt) to do our “torture” for us so that we may maintain our moral clarity is hypocrisy only if, as in Obama’s case, you clearly state that “torture” is wrong. And Egypt and Syria do things that make waterboarding look like taking a nap on a Sunday.
