Obama's Strategery

Pick your face and vote Democratic.

When Obama was running for president he came down pretty hard on President G.W. Bush for many things, specifically Gitmo and military tribunals as well as keeping secrets from the American public (soldier’s coffins coming home from Iraq and detainee photos).  In less than a week we have seen those very things he decried about the previous administration been restored in large part.

Closing Guantanamo Bay was a foolish decision because those enemy combatants (they are not soldiers recognized under the Geneva Convention) were safely tucked away in the middle of the ocean.  Now Gitmo is coming to the shores of the United States but Democrats, who screamed about it for years once 9-11 faded into history, are not so happy about that:

‘We’re not going to bring al Qaeda to Big Sky Country. No way, not on my watch,” declared Montana Sen. Max Baucus. “I wouldn’t want them and I wouldn’t take them,” insisted Nebraska’s Ben Nelson. Not Quantico, piped up Virginia’s Mark Warner. After all, it “is in a very populated area in the greater capital region.” Look, “Alcatraz is a national park and a tourist attraction, not a functioning prison” for terrorists, said the office of California’s Dianne Feinstein.

Public outrage has already inspired officials in Louisiana, California, Mississippi, Missouri and Virginia (for starters) to introduce or pass resolutions to stop terrorists from being sent to their communities.

The House instead last week yanked from an appropriations bill the $81 million Mr. Obama wants as a down payment to begin the process of shuttering the prison. Worried that even this didn’t provide enough cover, they also inserted language barring detainee transfers to the U.S. until at least October.

So let’s analyze this for a moment… after 9-11 hardly any Democrats said anything about how G.W. Bush was “handling” the war or its prisoners and this went on for years.  Once any danger of another attack disappeared (because of his “handling”) and once poor strategy in Iraq brought the U.S. body count skyward then the Democrats crawled out of the woodwork with their “concerns” which they literally spent years hammering on over and over.  Now they control the Executive and Legislative branches of government and when President Obama tries to close Gitmo (which Democrats cheered) they are trying their hardest to prevent any of those prisoners from coming to the United States!  How hypocritical is that?  Democrats made it a moral issue but now that it is time to do something about it they expose themselves as the petty pandering politicians that they are.  Queen of Hypocrisy is Nancy Pelosi who beat the Bush administration over the head with “torture” claims but now it looks like she knew of it all along.

President Obama announced that certain detainees would be held “indefinitely,” which is a policy he condemned when running for president!  Some have said Obama didn’t “know the facts” before he became president and now he has seen the light.  Let’s look at this statement for a minute.

Democrats say close it until it comes to their district.

Democrats say close it until it comes to their district.

The U.S. has in its custody some of the most dangerous people in the world how could Obama not know this before he became president?  Even I know this how could he not?  If he did not know who we had in custody then he must be stupid.  President Obama is not stupid.  So if he is an intelligent man then the only conclusion left is that he was pandering to his base.  And he was doing so in a way that made the United States look badly (how could we look good if he said Bush’s policies were morally wrong?).  And because he was pandering to his base he was also lying to them as well.  Ironic for a man who campaigned on change.

I do not buy the argument that President Obama is “learning on the job” because he has adopted many of the same positions, which he decried, that the Bush administration had because they just plain make sense:

President Bush never closed Gitmo because, put simply, the options were to transfer detainees to foreign countries or to transfer detainees here. Attorney General Eric Holder in April embarked on a “please take back your bad guys” road show through the very European countries that had sermonized about America’s offshore prison. The Brits and Germans sent the president their regards and promised to think about it.

If the Europeans are not forced to take some of these people why would they want to?  If their native countries don’t want them back and they are not forced to do so why would they want to?  Let the U.S. keep holding the bag as we have done for decades.  Let us figure it out (what about Obama’s changing Europe’s “tone” towards us?).

You have to hand it to G.W. Bush for creating Gitmo and wonder what Obama was thinking in closing it.  Especially now that Democrats have made it loud and clear they don’t want Gitmo in their districts even though they conveniently railed against the detention center while it was open and their asses were not on the line.

My biggest issue with the Democratic party is that they try and reduce every issue to a moral one but, most of the time, when it comes time to pay the bill for their lofty talk they simply shift the blame.  That’s why Nancy Pelosi is trying to blame the CIA for her lies.

What a disgrace.
