Truth teller or blabber mouth?

An interesting article at the National Review about why former Vice President Dick Cheney keeps talking to the press about the Obama administration.  Some of the criticism of Cheney has been that it is “rude” for a former administration to criticize the present administration but, as the article points out, this is a false assertion.

You may read the article here.

And on a related note, Al Gore dug into the Bush administration very soon after he took office:

On CNN Friday morning Former Vice President claimed he “waited two years to criticize the Bush administration. In fact, In September of 2002 he trashed then President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and the cabinet for their handling of the war against terrorism. “From the outset, the administration has operated in a manner calculated to please the portion of its base that occupies the far right,” Mr. Gore said. Gore called the Bush administration’s “attack on fundamental constitutional rights” beyond the “pale and un-American.” The Weekly Standard has more quotes of Former Vice President Al Gore speaking out against the Bush administration prior to the two-years he claimed to wait.

So many Democrats with memory problems these days.

  • And even if it were two years… There’s no difference between two years and two months. Both were prominent on their sides and had the right to criticize the new administrations.

I have my opinions about Cheney, but he should have a right to defend his actions in the previous administration without people crying about poor Obama getting hurt. I hope one day he’ll continue to defend his actions while sitting in a jail cell, but that’s a different issue.

  • You’re right, it wasn’t two years. The article you are quoting states that Gore waited only one year and 10 months after the 2000 election to criticize Bush. How dare Al Gore round upwards so outrageously!

    • Well the real point of the article was people who say it is wrong for Cheney to speak up because he’s no longer V.P. but Gore did the same thing but Cheney is asserting facts. I simply posted the info on Gore because it is an example of a former V.P. criticizing the new administration.

  • It is not wrong for Cheney to speak up. I fully support the First Amendment rights of every American, including Dick Cheney. The better question is whether Cheney is doing himself or his cause any good by speaking up in the way that he has. Isn’t it ironic that Cheney maintained such a low profile all the time that he was acting as a very powerful vice president, and now that he no longer has power, he is all over every possible news show. Had he been a bit more open as vice-president, people might be more receptive to his comments now. As it is, I think he sounds defensive, and I think he just incites his critics every time he opens his mouth. And he has a lot of critics!

    • Critics don’t need a reason to speak up about Cheney. He was subjected to comments even before he became VP.

Much of the media is against Cheney, obviously Obama doesn’t want his points to resound or he would have released the memos Cheney keeps talking about, and the Democrats in Congress probably wish he would just go away so I think it’s tough to judge whether it is really his comments that are doing harm or the people filtering his comments to the “public.”

Cheney will never get a fair shake I think.
