Faux pas or style over substance?

An interesting article about the recent flyby photo-op by the plane that is sometimes Air Force one:

Federal officials knew that sending two fighter jets and Air Force One to buzz ground zero and Lady Liberty might set off nightmarish fears of a 9/11 replay, but they still ordered the photo-op kept secret from the public.

In a memo obtained by CBS 2 HD the Federal Aviation Administration’s James Johnston said the agency was aware of “the possibility of public concern regarding DOD (Department of Defense) aircraft flying at low altitudes” in an around New York City. But they demanded total secrecy from the NYPD, the Secret Service, the FBI and even the mayor’s office and threatened federal sanctions if the secret got out.

For once, a government program actually succeeded in reaching its goals.  If it’s not about “torture” you can keep a secret!

Even Sen. Charles Schumer, who never saw something he didn’t like threw in his own two cents:

“To say that it should not be made public knowing that it might scare people it’s just confounding.  It’s what gives Washington and government a bad name. It’s sheer stupidity.”

The incident cost $328,835.00.  Maybe President Obama should have considered this idea to be part of his $100 million of “savings.”

I wonder if the guy who took Bush’s infamous “Mission Accomplished” picture came up with the idea?  New Yorkers were obviously shaken up by the 9-11 similarity but, then again, since Obama has decided to make nice with unfriendly regimes and “man-created disaster” suspects it might be a primer on what’s to come?
