The Surreal Life of Barack Obama

Reality intrudes upon dreamland.

Reality intrudes upon dreamland.

sur-re-al [suh-ree-uhl, -reel]
–adjective
1. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of surrealism; surrealistic.
2. having the disorienting, hallucinatory quality of a dream; unreal; fantastic: surreal complexities of the bureaucracy.

How else can we try and explain portions of the speech that President Obama gave in the Czech Republic hours after North Korea launched their multi-stage missile that, had it worked properly, could possibly reach Hawaii or parts of Alaska?

North Korea broke the rules once more by testing a rocket that could be used for a long range missile.

This provocation underscores the need for action — not just this afternoon at the UN Security Council, but in our determination to prevent the spread of these weapons. Rules must be binding. Violations must be punished. Words must mean something.

Let’s take a look at that United Nations’ support:

In the meantime, the U.N. Security Council – at the behest of the U.S. and its key allies in East Asia, Japan and South Korea – convened yesterday to consider a response to the launch. But the meeting broke up late Sunday night with no agreement on anything, and that speaks volumes about the gap that now exists between China and Russia on one side (both permanent members of the Security Council) and the U.S., South Korea and Japan on the other.

Everybody in the world knew the missile launch by North Korea was coming… indeed North Korea wanted and needed everybody to know.  So the “world community” President Obama speaks of once again has failed to do anything at all.  A familar refrain heard before on subjects such as Bosnia and Darfur.

Now let’s see what President Obama can do to, in his words:

Rules must be binding. Violations must be punished. Words must mean something.

What, exactly, is President Obama going to do to North Korea that hasn’t already been done?  Virtually every nation has sanctions already on North Korea and going after that country militarily is not an option as they would light South Korea up like a Christmas tree should they feel threatened.  There has not been any U.S. president who has been able to do anything with North Korea and, technically, the U.S. and that nation are still at war.

So it is all talk and there is nothing to back it up.

Finally, let’s take a look at President Obama’s other “quest” which he made in the same speech:

So today, I state clearly and with conviction America’s commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons. This goal will not be reached quickly — perhaps not in my lifetime. It will take patience and persistence. But now we, too, must ignore the voices who tell us that the world cannot change.

India built their nuclear weapons to protect themselves from Pakistan and Pakistan acquired their nuclear weapons to guard against an attack by India.  North Korea has nuclear weapons and Iran is seeking them.  Is President Obama going to invade Iran?  Is he going to launch airstrikes against them in order to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon?  Of course not.  Iran will get their nukes on the sly by delaying and using harsh words the same way North Korea, Pakistan, and India did.  In the end, the U.S. will be forced to accept it.

Noble words are fine for President Obama to use but noble and hollow words turn him into a surreal farce who will be exploited by those nations which seek to advance their agendas.

  • I agree that no other U.S. president has been able to put much fear in North Korea and, they continue to be at war with each other.

  • The key here is that North Korea is a WORLD problem, not just a US problem. As such, the United Nations needs to solve the problem. Obviously that hasn’t happened, and isn’t going to happen with drastic reform of the UN. Something like this must happen first…

  • Gary,

Thanks for your comment but I hate to break it to you that the U.N. is a corrupt organization that will never be reformed and nothing will ever get done through them.

    See this article about them:

  • admin,

I’m just as happy if we start over. From what I have heard, the UN is hopelessly bureaucratic, so ANY reform is unlikely. Regardless of how it happens, the change is urgently needed.

  • I would like to see positive change, too, however the U.N. isn’t going to change and there isn’t going to be anything to replace it, either. That’s why nothing gets “done” there except the swapping of rhetoric.

  • That may be true today, but with enough hardship (a couple of nuclear terrorist attacks, etc), people may have new motivation. I hope it won’t take that, but hard to say.
