It's not Fruity, It's Green

Havle the population, save a backyard.
Many of the same people who are telling us humans are destroying the world with “global warming” are now telling the people of Great Britan that unless they halve their population, disaster will strike! We expect loopy ideas like this from the Left but what is so alarming is that this is not your average greenie but one of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s leading “green” advisors.
In a recent article in the Sunday Times, Jonathan Porritt has stated:
Porritt’s call will come at this week’s annual conference of the Optimum Population Trust (OPT), of which he is patron.
The trust will release research suggesting UK population must be cut to 30m if the country wants to feed itself sustainably.
Porritt said: “Population growth, plus economic growth, is putting the world under terrible pressure.
Let’s see… what are the choices to cut the population of England by 50%? You could start by aborting all babies, murder the eldery, sick, and maybe prisoners, deport all non-citizens, or be like Communist China and force every woman to only have one child. Sounds a lot like tyranny from the Left to me. You’d think a loony like this would be off to himself but it’s surprising that he’s an adviser to the British Prime Minister and, apparently, much more than that:
However, Porritt is winning scientific backing. Professor Chris Rapley, director of the Science Museum, will use the OPT conference, to be held at the Royal Statistical Society, to warn that population growth could help derail attempts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
We already know that CO2 and other emissions contribute next to nothing towards “global warming” if natually occurring water vapor is included in the equation (but that would spoil a good story):

You cant ban water vapor!
This entire line about reducing the population to save the world is a joke that has already been discredited. A book that came out in 1968 said that unless the world’s population was reduced we’d all starve to death and die by the 1980s, it was call The Population Bomb. According to a Wikipedia article on this book:
The Population Bomb (1968) is a book written by Paul R. Ehrlich. A best-selling work, it predicted disaster for humanity due to overpopulation and the “population explosion”. The book predicted that “in the 1970s and 1980s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death”, that nothing can be done to avoid mass famine greater than any in the history, and radical action is needed to limit the overpopulation. History proved Ehrlich wrong, as the mass starvations predicted for the 1970s and 1980s never occurred, apart from in Africa.
Let’s remind ourselves that starvation in Africa had nothing to do with not being able to grow enough food but, rather, with dictators disrupting the economy and using food as a weapon to maintain their power.
So, will Porritt be committing suicide to help save the planet or, perhaps, he’ll just collect speaking fees and buy a nice house in the British countyside?
I’m not sure which is worse, that this guy has a voice in government or that other people actually believe him.

Interestingly, the same leftists who are responsible for creating cradle to grave entitlement programs are the same ones who want to limit population growth. However, the very idea of an entitlement program such as social security or universal health care must be built on a demographic foundation where population is at least growing at the replacement rate. I recently read, The Next Hundred Years by George Friedman, and he basically predicts that most of the modern world will be experiencing severe declines in their population by 2030. At this time you will see all of these countries develop massive immigration incentives to try and bring in the necessary labor to support bloated and bankrupt entitlement programs. Britain, who has withstood invasion for practically a millennium will be begging to be invaded by 2030.

The demographic timebomb is already there. Belgium has a 25% Muslim population and countries like Germany and England are seeing their societies begin to change. Cities in France, mainly in the south, already have experienced this and within two generations, I think, the Europe we knew will be no more. They will be replaced instead by less educated, less skilled, poorer, less secular populations.
Thanks for your post.

The way you reduce the population is to reduce the birth rate. This has already happened to a large extent in Europe, where in some countries population growth is below replacement levels. China’s one child policy is also having an effect. What’s the alternative? How many people can the earth sustain without reducing quality of life? Are we living at a sustainable level now?

Europeans are already not replacing themselves and this is why they are bringing in immigrant populations to replace lost labor pools… they are reproducing at very high numbers cancelling out any “gain” from native populations.
And China relies on forced abortions… something I’m not in favor of.
The West is living at sustainable levels, the Third World is not.

Not that I’m totally impressed, but this is a lot more than I expected for when I stumpled upon a link on Furl telling that the info here is quite decent. Thanks.
